Womanhood reimagined: The ambedkarite perspective on gender, equality, and social change

Author(s):

Hareet Kumar Meena

Abstract:

The life of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar was a testament to his unwavering commitment to fighting social injustice. His socio-political vision was rooted in three fundamental principles: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Through his studies and experiences, Ambedkar concluded that the caste hierarchy and ignorance towards weaker sections of society, including untouchables and women, were the primary causes of injustice in India. He believed that the caste system had been exploited by orthodox individuals to suppress socio-political reforms, and argued that annihilating the caste system was essential for any reform movement to succeed. In defending women education, equality, and empowerment, Ambedkar not only redefined the role of women in Indian society but also highlighted their critical importance in building a just and prosperous nation. His legacy endures as a testament to his far-reaching vision and tireless advocacy for marginalized communities. After India gained independence in 1947, Ambedkar fought for justice for the weaker sections of society by advocating for provisions in the Constitution. His efforts brought unprecedented dignity to the lives of women and untouchables, a feat that other social and religious reformers had attempted but failed to achieve for centuries. The ultimate goal of Dr Ambedkar was to inspire people to strive for righteous relationships, guided by practical principles rather than speculative ideologies.
