Women and the organic approach: Gendered perspectives in Indian agricultural practices

Author(s):

Abstract:

This study explores the critical role of women in the organic farming movement within India, highlighting the gendered dimensions of agricultural practices and decision-making. In rural India, women are often the primary cultivators and custodians of traditional knowledge related to sustainable farming, yet their contributions remain under-recognized in mainstream agricultural discourse. The organic approach, emphasizing ecological balance, soil health, and chemical-free cultivation, aligns closely with the indigenous practices predominantly managed by women. This research investigates how women farmers integrate organic methods in their daily agricultural activities and how gender influences access to resources, knowledge dissemination, and market participation. Through qualitative interviews and field observations across multiple Indian states, the study reveals the intersection of gender, culture, and agriculture, demonstrating that empowering women in organic farming not only enhances productivity but also contributes to environmental conservation and community well-being. Additionally, it identifies the socio-economic challenges women face, such as limited land ownership, lack of credit facilities, and gender-biased extension services, which impede the wider adoption of organic farming. The findings emphasize the need for gender-sensitive agricultural policies that support women's agency and leadership in sustainable agriculture. By centering women’s experiences, this research contributes to broader conversations on gender equity and environmental sustainability in Indian agriculture, advocating for inclusive approaches that recognize women as vital agents of ecological stewardship and rural development.
