Abstract:

Natural disasters such as floods often result in profound psychological disturbances, including post-traumatic stress reactions (PTSR), anxiety, depression, and a sense of helplessness among survivors. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role of spiritual and meditative practices in promoting psychological resilience and recovery among disaster-affected populations. Rajyoga Meditation, a spiritual technique taught by the Brahma Kumaris, emphasizes self-realization, inner peace, and connection with the Supreme Being, which collectively enhance mental stability and emotional regulation. The recent study examines the efficacy of Rajyoga Meditation on reducing post-traumatic stress reactions (PTSR)among individuals affected by recurrent floods in selected flood-prone areas of West Bengal(Unpublished data of the Author, TNM). A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two groups: an intervention group practicing Rajyoga Meditation and a control group receiving no structured meditation intervention. Participants were selected through purposive sampling from flood-affected communities, ensuring comparable demographic and trauma exposure characteristics. The intervention group underwent a structured Rajyoga Meditation training program for a specified duration under certified instructors. Pre and post intervention assessments were conducted using standardized tools measuring post-traumatic stress reactions, anxiety and overall well-being. Findings revealed a significant reduction in PTSR scores among participants who practiced Rajyoga Meditation compared to the control group. The meditation group also demonstrated improvements in emotional stability, sleep quality and coping mechanisms. Qualitative feedback from participants indicated enhanced feelings of peace, acceptance, and spiritual strength, suggesting that the meditative process fostered self-regulation and reduced trauma-related distress. Others recent studies also indicate that Rajyoga Meditation is an effective complementary psychosocial intervention for mitigating post-traumatic stress among flood survivors. By promoting inner calmness, self-awareness, and positive thinking, Rajyoga Meditation can serve as a valuable tool in post-disaster mental health rehabilitation programs. Integrating such spiritual based interventions within disaster management frameworks may strengthen community resilience and support holistic recovery among disaster affected populations.
