History writing in the digital age: opportunities and challenges: A review of digital archives, Wikipedia, and public history

Author(s):

Abstract:

The digital age has brought major changes to how we study, write, and share history. In the past, historians mainly relied on physical books, archives, and in-person research. But today, digital tools like online archives, Wikipedia, and digital humanities platforms have opened up new ways to access and understand historical information. These changes have made history more accessible to a wider audience and allowed for faster research, global collaboration, and public engagement. At the same time, the digital age also brings new challenges. Questions about the reliability of online sources, biased edits on open platforms, and unequal access to digital tools (known as the digital divide) are serious concerns. While more people can participate in history writing today, it also becomes harder to control accuracy and depth. Present paper reviews the key developments in history writing during the digital age. It explores the opportunities offered by new technologies as well as the problems that come with them, aiming to understand how digital tools are shaping the future of historical research and storytelling.
