Unemployment is a persistent challenge in Bihar, stemming from factors such as overpopulation, limited industrialization, and a predominantly agrarian economy. This analytical study examines the role of electric rickshaws (E-rickshaws) as a viable solution for addressing unemployment in the state. E-rickshaws offer significant advantages, including low entry barriers, affordability, and eco-friendly operations, making them accessible to unskilled and semi-skilled individuals. Additionally, their growing demand in urban and semi-urban areas provides a sustainable source of income for operators. The study identifies key challenges in the E-rickshaw ecosystem in Bihar, such as regulatory gaps, inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, and market saturation in urban areas. It also highlights the potential for women’s empowerment and rural employment through targeted initiatives. To optimize job creation, the study proposes policy recommendations, including the formalization of the E-rickshaw sector, expansion of financial support, development of charging and maintenance infrastructure, and the integration of E-rickshaws into urban transport systems. Skill development programs and incentives for marginalized groups are also emphasized. Case studies from Patna and other districts illustrate the socio-economic impact of E-rickshaws on employment and urban mobility. With strategic interventions, the E-rickshaw sector can significantly contribute to reducing unemployment and fostering inclusive growth in Bihar.
