The impact of higher education on technological innovation capability: An econometric analysis based on panel data from 31 provinces in China

Abstract:

Higher education is an important part of the technological innovation system. This paper takes 31 provinces in China as the research object, selects the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2012 to 2021, constructs higher education measurement indexes from quantity, quality and environment, constructs technological innovation capacity measurement indexes with the number of effective patents, and through regression modeling as well as the heterogeneity analysis at the time level and the individual level, it explores in depth the mechanism of higher education's impact on the technological innovation capacity and the regional differences. The study mainly finds that higher education has a significant impact on technological innovation capacity, which is a positive influence factor on technological innovation, the higher the level of higher education is, the higher the level of technological innovation is, and the degree of higher education's impact on technological innovation capacity increases year by year, and higher education is becoming more and more important to technological innovation. At the same time, the influence of higher education on technological innovation ability is closely related to regional development, higher education in developed regions has a stronger role in promoting technological innovation ability, and higher education in less developed regions has a weaker influence on technological innovation ability.
